Postponement of Yellowtail Closure

Sunday, September 9th, 2012

This is a copy on an email we got yesterday from Bill Kelly. Good news all in all but still the closure could come in the future. We appreciate all of you who wrote letters, emails and phone calls.

YELLOWTAIL SNAPPER CLOSURE

To All Concerned:

In a telephone conversation on Friday, September 7, 2012, I was advised by Dr. Roy Crabtree, Regional Administrator, NMFS/SERO, of the following:

1- The precautionary approach to setting an Annual Catch Limit on yellowtail snapper provides a slight margin for keeping the season open perhaps another two to three weeks. Following further review of commercial landings in the South Atlantic, Dr. Crabtree/NOAA/NMFS/SERO will publish a notice in the Federal Register on Monday, September 10, 2012 announcing a notice extending the season for a set period of time.

2- Both NOAA and FWC have been notified by Dr. Crabtree of the planned season extension and the waiver of closure set for Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

3- This seasonal extension will give both the South Atlantic and Gulf Councils and their respective Science and Statistical Committees additional time to complete a Peer Review of the recent yellowtail snapper stock assessment. If the Peer Review supports the findings in the SEDAR stock assessment and recommends an increase in the Acceptable Biological Catch limit, then the Councils will have the authority to increase the Annual Catch Limit (ACL) set for fishermen. A significant increase in the ACL may be sufficient for Dr. Crabtree to issue an emergency rule further extending the season and in essence preventing a closure during the remainder of the calendar year.

On behalf of our yellowtail snapper fishermen, fish houses and restaurant owners, I would like to thank Dr. Crabtree and the Gulf and South Atlantic Councils for their diligence and cooperative efforts with industry to, at least temporarily, avert a closure in the yellowtail snapper fishery. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will meet next week in Charleston, SC and the Snapper/Grouper Committee will convene on Tuesday and Wednesday. You can access additional information and live viewing links at www.SAFMC.net.

Sincerely,

Bill Kelly

Ed and Tephany Odom from Morris Il celebrated their honeymoon with a great fishing trip to the reef. Tephany released this barracuda and they also brought in their limit of yellowtail snapper!
